AI SafeStep: Ollama

One shared learning journey, with clear device pathways.

AI SafeStep™: Ollama is a hands-on guidebook for older adults, families, libraries, and adult-learning groups. It teaches the same five safety habits used across the whole series: Pause, Ask, Check, Protect, and Talk.

Ollama is a free program you install on your own computer. It downloads open engines — such as Gemma, Qwen, Mistral, or gpt-oss — and runs them locally. Once a model is downloaded, it can answer without the internet, and your typing stays on your machine.

Begin with the one that feels easiest. You can come back later and choose a different pathway.

Pathway 1

  1. Go to ollama.com and download the Windows installer (OllamaSetup.exe).
  2. Run the installer. Administrator rights are not required — it installs into your own account.
  3. Ollama then runs quietly in the background and serves a local address at http://localhost:11434.
  4. Open the Ollama app, or a terminal, and ask for a small model first — a small one downloads faster and runs on more machines.
  5. Type your question and read the answer. Nothing leaves your computer.
  6. Go to ollama.com and download the macOS version.

What Ollama calls the things this guidebook teaches.

Every AI tool uses slightly different words for the same actions. The left column is the Ask & Answer word, used across the whole series. The right column is what this tool shows on screen. When a feature is not listed below, the maker does not name it, so do not expect to find it.

Five small tasks to learn Ollama.

Task 1

Make a confusing topic easier to understand.

Five habits that work with every AI tool.

These five habits do not change when the tool changes. They are the part of this guidebook worth keeping after the buttons have been renamed.

  1. Pause. Stop before you act on an answer. Nothing an AI tool says needs to be used in the next minute.
  2. Ask. Ask again in your own words. “Please make that simpler.” “Use a real-life example.” “Give me only three steps.”
  3. Check. Check anything that affects money, health, legal matters, or safety with an official source or a trusted person.
  4. Protect. Protect private details. No Social Security number, bank or card numbers, full medical records, or passwords.
  5. Talk. Talk it over with someone you trust before a decision that costs money or changes your care.
